Walter Becker’s Last Days Revealed
Steely Dan fans are still reeling from the shocking news of the death of Walter Becker on September 3rd. He was just 67. While there has still been no cause of death revealed, some insight to the guitarist’s final days are beginning to emerge.
Becker, who suffered from hepatitis C, was forced to miss two Steely Dan shows in July. At the time, Fagen said that the guitarist was “recovering from a procedure” and that “hopefully he will be fine very soon.” Comedian Chevy Chase, who befriended Becker and his Steely Dan co-founder Donald Fagen during their days at Bard University admits he "had no idea how sick [Walter] had become.”
Fagen visited Becker in the hospital a week before his death, according to their friend Pete Fogel. “I could sense that he knew that might have been the list time he would see Walter,” Fogel admits. He goes on to say that the pair "reminisced about their long personal and musical relationship.” Fogel adds, “It was very sad, to say the least.”
As we told you before, Fagen intends to complete the upcoming Steely Dan fall tour dates, which were set to kick off October 13th in Thackerville, Oklahoma. After Becker’s passing, Fagen answered those questioning the move saying, quote - “I intend to keep the music we created together alive as long as I can with the Steely Dan band.”
