What is the right age to let kids have a little freedom?

Today I let my son bike to McDonald's.

Big deal, Dave. I hear what you're thinking!

Charlie is 12 years old and McDonald's is several miles from our house, and I let him get there on his own with a few friends.

I thought it was time for him to have a little freedom. Make some decisions without me close by.

What's funny is 12 seems to be the dividing line with parents. A mom of one of his friends refused to let her son go that far, while another mom said - "Sure!"

I let him do it because 12 years old in the summer time was one of the greatest times of my life.

I remember getting my freedom at 12. My friends and I would climb on our BMX bikes and head to King's Rowe Hobby Shop in Troy, Michigan to look at the latest model rockets.

Then we'd head next door for some pizza.

No Twitter, no Facebook, no Snapchat, no politics, mortgage or bills. Just friends hanging out trying to make each other laugh with fart jokes.

So off Charlie went...with a few bucks for a hamburger, and his fishing pole.

I let him also stop by a lake to do some fishin'... where he proceeded to text me his catch of the day.

This is what summer is all about.
